Warriors of Faith

Baba Phoola Singh Ji - 3 (Shaheedi)

Immortal Jeevan

He was the one who always saw his life as debt of Panth, forever ready to lay it down at altar of Dharam. He was the real Nihang- above the filth and impurities of this world, imbued in Naam of Waheguru, with a divine glow on his face and shine in his eyes, forever ready to protect Deen-Dharam. He was part of Khalsa Fauj, but was not under command of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, instead he always lived as Soldier of Guru, directly under command of Guru Gobind Singh ji, maintaining his freedom and sovereignty as Army of Akaal Purakh.

He is, till today, most honoured and respected Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib. For him, Sikhi values and principles mattered most, more than his life or anything else. He didn’t fear anyone, whether it was Maharaja Ranjeet Singh or British (who tried to capture him with help of princely states of Patiala and Nabha when he came to Sri Anandpur Sahib in 1804). Guru and Sikhi was everything for him and protecting Sikhi and propagating teachings of Gurus was main mission of his life. He loved the peace, the purity and sanctity of Darbar Sahib Sri Amritsar sahib so much that, during a meeting of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and British officials in Amritsar, Shia soldiers of British Army took out their Moharram Procession in Amritsar and when their procession passed from the lane behind Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib, Babaji sent some Singhs to request Muslims to pass silently from near Darbar Sahib as their cries and screams were disturbing peace of Sri Darbar Sahib. But the Muslims instead became aggressive, upon which Babaji asked Singhs to teach them Khalsa way of Peace. There was a fight and 25 Muslims were killed by Akali Singhs in this clash. Upon hearing news of fight, Maharaja Sahib and British officers reached the spot and seeing Mahakaal saroop of Babaji and his Akali warriors, asked Babaji for forgiveness.

The Vision of a Mighty Akaali Baba Phoola Singh ji, holding a Giant Tega in his hand was enough for enemies to shiver with fear. For Babaji, distinct identity, freedom and prosperity of Khalsa Panth was of utmost importance. He was born at a time Panth was struggling for existence and he saw how elders of Panth had given their lives and shed their blood for Charhdi Kala of Sikhi and he took it upon himself that this Kingdom created after a million sacrifices was protected at any cost. (And there have been people who claimed to be descendants and rightful heirs of Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji, but never stood for Sikhi, Sikh identity and freedom or took any action against enemies of Sikh Panth, instead, sided with enemies of Panth who demolished Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib in 1984 and later ,during Sikh Freedom struggle, fought in lines of enemies of Panth against Sikh Freedom Fighters.)

When Maharaja Ranjeet Singh planned to marry a Muslim dancer, Moran, Babaji was furious. Maharaja had agreed to give half of his kingdom to Moran and there was uproar and every possibility of a revolt against him by Khalsa Fauj. Babaji, in his power as Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib, summoned Maharaja to Takhat Sahib and gave him Tankhah (punishment) for having relations with Moran. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh was tied to a tree near Akaal Takhat Sahib and Babaji himself gave him 25 cane-beats, a punishment which Maharaja humbly accepted. After that Singh Sahib Babaji reminded Ranjeet Singh that this Kingdom was result of thousands of Sacrifices by Sikhs and it didn’t belong to him, but to entire Khalsa Panth and he was just a servant who was given Kingship by Panth. There were tears in eyes of Maharaja Sahib and he was ashamed of his deed. This was the Jeevan, the courage, the determination which made him the most honoured figure of 19th century. Elders of Panth saw in him light of Baba Deep Singh ji. While Baba Deep Singh ji (first Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan) was the pillar of Sikh struggle and ideologue in 18th century, Baba Phoola Singh ji (Sixth Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan) held the same position, power and respect in 19th century.

In March 1823, Pathan tribes of North West frontier province (then known as State of Peshawar) revolted against Khalsa Raaj with help from Afghan Ruler, Dost Mohammed Khan.  A 40,000 strong Pathan Army, with help of Aghan Artillery ravaged through parts of Northern Hills, killing innocents and murdering Sikhs living there. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh ji quickly moved with Khalsa Fauj to take on Pathan Army with Generals like Akali Babaji, Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa and Kanwar Kharak Singh ji. Sardar Khushal Singh was ordered to bring Heavy Artillery from Lahore while Hari Singh Nalwa commanded elite forces. Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji, who generally used to stay at Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib on New year day ( Chaittar Di Sangrand), decided to lead Misal/Akaal Regiment in this Battle.

At Amritvela, on 14th March 1823, standing in Hazoori of Guru Granth Sahib ji with Maharaja, Sikh Generals, soldiers and his loyal Akali Warriors, Babaji did Ardas at feet of Satguru Granth Sahib ji to bless Khalsa Fauj with Fateh and Shaheediyan, and also asked for Hukamnaama for Army to move. After Hukamnaama, Babaji readied to move to battlefield. Battle Standards were raised and as Akali Fauja beat battle-drums to move to battlefield, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh told Babaji that heavy Artilley had still not reached and Sikh army was around 25,000 against Afghan Army of 40,000. He requested Babaji to wait for a day as till then more Army and Artillery would reach, but Babaji angrily reprimanded Maharaja Ranjeet Singh for forgetting his Ardas. Babaji said ‘ Shere Punjab, you can wait for artillery and Army, I can not. I have done ardas at feet of Satguru Granth Sahib ji and I will not back off from my ardas. Its not in tradition of our Misal to back off after Ardas, so no matter what, I will go to battle with my Fauj, if you wish, you can follow. No matter what, Victory will be ours’’. These words were enough to infuse spirit in Maharaja’s heart and he ordered entire Sikh Army to move to battlefield. Legend has it that when Sikh Army neared River Attock, it was flooding and there was no chance that Sikhs could cross the river. Babaji asked Maharaja Ranjeet Singh to do Japji Sahib Paath and Ardas, and as Maharaja Ranjeet Singh did Paath and Ardas and moved his horse in river, Attock became silent and water level fell miraculously.

On one hand was Khalsa Fauj, and in front lines were standing Immortal Warriors of Akaal Purakh, dressed in Blue, with tall turbans decorated with Shastars, holding Khalsai Nishans  and in front of them stood the Legendary warrior, Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji. As the Akalis saw enemies, war cries of Bole So Nihal- Sat Sri Akaal- Gurbar Akaal- Har Har Akaal pierced through the skies and there was a heavenly roar, as gods were responding to war-cries of Akaali Nihangs.  Babaji pulled out his Tega and charged at enemies, as if he was going to meet someone beloved and his immortal warriors followed him. Pathans responded with canon fire, but Akali warriors, tore through the enemy lines and turned the gun barrels towards enemies. Rest of the Army followed, while Maharaja Ranjeet Singh saw battlescene from a distance. Some Pathan battalions were stationed atop hills looking at the ‘Battlefield of Tarki ‘, and they started firing canons at charging Sikh Army. Akali Nihangs played the game of death and blood in battlefield and each Sikh killed scores of enemies. Babaji, at age of 62, were fighting like a lion cutting every enemy coming in his way, when suddenly from hilltop, hundreds of bullets hit his body. Enemy had been looking for him, and as Babaji came into their hitting range, they hit him with a volley of bullets. But that barrage of bullets wasn’t enough to bring him down, as the battle ensued and blood flew from his body, Babaji got numerous cuts of swords from his enemies on his body, but with every cut, glow on his face increased. As if her mother was looking at her from heavens and saying ‘Son, I had wished this Shaheedi for you, and today Maharaj has fulfilled my wish’. There was a peace, a joy, a bliss in his heart, of being able to die as a Shaheed for Guru and Panth, of being worthy of Dasmesh Pita’s love after Shaheedi. With every passing moment, a bullet was hitting and a sword was cutting his body, but Babaji didn’t fall from his horse, till the enemy hadn’t retreated, till the victory flag was not raised, till ardas of ‘Waheguru ji ki Fateh’ hadn’t been fulfilled in battlefield.

Enemy fled from battlefield of Tarki, and as Sikhs celebrated victory, Babaji came down from his horse and looking at his brave knights, fell on battlefield, as he wished to kiss the battlefield which honoured him with title of Shaheed. Maharaja, Generals and Akali warriors surrounded Babaji’s Holy body, purified by his holy blood, having hundreds of bullets and cuts in it. It was first time Maharaja Ranjeet Singh cried in Battlefield, each and every eye there was wet with tears of love, of devotion, of respect to great Sikh General of 19th century.

Babaji’s Antim Sanskaar was done on banks of River Landa in Naushera. A Gurudwara was built alongwith a cantonment of Nihang Singhs. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh attached vast Jagir(property) with this holy place, where Great Akali Babaji’s holy and pure memorial stood.

Generations of Sikhs will come and go, but Legend of Baba Phoola Singh ji is and will be Immortal. He held the title of Akali- Immortal, and he is immortal.

Sometimes I feel we Sikhs of today are in no way, even a percent, like those Sikhs. I rememeber, when I read Giani Kirpal Singh (ex-jathedar Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib) written book, Saaka Neela Taara (Blue Star), i was lost in Babaji’s memory. Kirpal Singh writes ‘’ As deafening sounds of Bombs and bullets rose on night of 4th and 5th June, I was worried about what was happening to Akaal Takhat Sahib, but I didn’t get out of my house as it was curfew and army could have shot me. I stayed with my family in Ajeet Nagar and waited for gunfire to cease’’.

What type of Jathedar he or others who claimed to be Jathedars were? Are they , in any way, able to be called Jathedars of Akaal Takhat Sahib? Would Baba Deep Singh ji, Baba Gurbaksh Singh ji or Baba Phoola Singh ji stayed at their Bungas, hiding, while Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib was being demolished? Would Baba Phoola Singh ji have waited for destruction of Akaal Takhat Sahib to complete? No, they were the ones who would have defended Akaal Takhat Sahib, their Sikhi, their Panth with all the power, all the blood and breaths they had. Would Baba Phoola Singh ji have sided with someone who destroyed Akaal Takhat Sahib and killed thousands of innocent Sikhs? Would Baba Phoola Singh ji had defended the destruction of Akaal Takhat Sahib and killing of Innocents like some people, who claimed to be heirs of Babaji’s legacy, did?

Reading and writing about Jeevans of Shaheeds is useful if only we are ready to walk on their path, follow on their footsteps, try to do, at least one percent, what they did for Sikhi and Khalsa Panth, and if we did, our Jeevan, our blood, our breath, our Life will become worthy of being called a Human life.

Baba Phoola Singh Ji - 2 (Janam and Jeevan)

Satguru Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj’s ji is Maali (gardener) of this beautiful garden called Sikhi. Everyday beautiful flowers bloom in this garden who gives out fragrance of Purity, humility, humane values, freedom, equality, Godly Love and Infinity. They live for giving life to others and sacrifice their self for making garland of humanity more beautiful and fragrant. Out of many such flowers was Jathedar Akaali Baba Phoola Singh ji.

Babaji was born in 1761 to Bhai Isher Singh ji and Mata Raj Kaur ji. Bhai Isher Singh ji was from Dal of Jathedar Baba Deep Singh ji Shaheed. Legend has it that when first child was to be born in Bhai Isher Singh’s house, he with his wife went to Babaji and said,’ Babaji, its our wish that this child of ours becomes a Sant, who gives out fragrance of Naam and Baani, so that we are also blessed’. Baba Deep Singh ji smiled and said ‘So it shall be, but you are destined to have two sons, how you wish your second son to be?’ Mata ji was overjoyed, and next moment she replied ‘ Babaji, do ardas to Maharaj that my second son is a brave and fearless soldier, who defends Sikhi and fights for Panth his entire life, and may he die in battlefield as a Shaheed, a Shaheed who has hundred cuts and hundred bullets in his body, and when his blood falls on this earth, may Pita Guru Gobind Singh ji take him in his lap’.

Tears of Prem and respect fell from eyes of Singhs present when they heard the Ardas of a Sikh mother of that time, and Baba Deep Singh ji’s face turned red, a heavenly glow shone on his face and eyes brightened, and then the holy saint spoke, ‘ Satguru ji has heard your Ardas, A flower will come from his garden to your house, take good care of him. He will be a unique ‘full’(flower), whose legend will be immortal like the title he will hold’.

First child of Bhai Isher Singh ji was Bhai Sant Singh ji, who was a well respected saint-scholar of Sikh panth. In 1761, second son was born, who, with Maharaj’s Hukam and Baba Deep Singh ji’s words was named ‘ Phoola Singh’. Few months after his birth, Bhai Isher Singh ji attained Shaheedi in Vadda ghallughara, in Feb 1762. Before dying, he gave responsibility of his son to his best friend in Dal, Baba Naina Singh ji.

Mataji lived with her sons in village Sheeha(n) in Amritsar. When Phoola Singh was 7 years old, her mother took her to Akaal Bunga sahib that time and dedicated his Son in service of Khalsa Panth. Mukhi Singhs of Misal Shaheedan that time, Baba Karam Singh ji, Baba Natha Singh ji, Baba Sadhu Singh ji and others who were at Akaal Takhat Sahib that day, placed child Phoola Singh under guidance of Baba Naina Singh ji. In Jatha of Baba Naina Singh ji, young Phoola Singh learnt Gurbaani Vidya, Shastar Vidya and spent his time in meditation and sewa. In few years time, young Phoola Singh was a well known name in whole Dal Panth. As times changed and Sikhs started ruling over Punjab, Misal Shaheedan also created its independent territory in Shahzadpur (Ambala) and Grihasthi Singhs of Misal settled down and took to farming and other occupations. Bihangam(celibate) Singhs of Misal continued with their Chakkarvarti Jeevan and roamed around countryside, punishing tyrants and oppressors, looking after Gurudwaras, doing Sikhi Parchar and giving Pehra in Khalsai Traditions. With time, Jathedar Baba Naina Singh ji became 5th Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan and Baba Phoola Singh ji became his deputy.

Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan

Baba Naina Singh ji lived a Chakkarvarti Jeevan, visiting and looking after Damdama Sahib, Anandpur Sahib and other places, but main Chhauni of Misal was at Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib. When Babaji grew old, he gave Chakkarvarti Sewa to Baba Phoola Singh, who was main caretaker of Damdama Sahib and Anandpur Sahib. In 1799, when Babaji, along with 2000 soldiers of Misal was camping on Banks of River Satluj, a Singh informed Babaji about a Cavalry regiment of British Army approaching towards Satluj, to cross in Punjab and conquer certain areas, as Dals had broken and Misals of Sikhs were divided and fighting within them to control areas. Babaji saw it as a threat to hard earned freedom of Punjab and aroused his brave Akaali warriors for ‘Dharamyudh’, to which Singhs responded with battle cries, sounding of trumpets and battle drums. Battle standards were raised and as the British troops approached the Bridge over Satluj, Akali warriors pounced upon them like lions. That was the first time British had seen chivalry, war-spirit and fury of Akali Nihangs. Within hours, whole cavalry was cut down and only people who survived were Commanding Officer and his Lieutenant, who were severely injured in this battle.

When news of this bravery reached Akali Baba Naina Singh ji, he was pleased so much that he chose Baba Phoola Singh ji as 6th Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan.
( All the historical sources like ‘ Itihasik Khoj’ by Karam Singh Historian( 1901), ‘ Akali Phoola Singh’ by Baba Prem Singh Hoti Mardan (1903) and Mahan Kosh by Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha (1930) provide historical evidence of the fact that Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji was Jathedar of Misal Shaheedan, and not ‘any other' Jathebandi or Dal).

In 1800, Baba Phoola Singh ji started his Sewa of Akaal Takhat Sahib and other Takhats. With him remained 2200 tyar bar tyar Akali Nihang Singh Soldiers of Misal Shaheedan who were loyal only to Guru Granth Sahib ji and Charhdi Kala of Khalsa Panth. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh recognized this power, charisma and bravery of Akali Singhs and requested Baba Phoola Singh ji to assist him in creation of Khalsa Raaj. It was due to will of Singhs like Babaji and Baba Sahib Singh ji that Kingdom of Punjab was known as ‘Sarkar Khalsa’(Government of Khalsa).

Babaji’s Military Expeditions

After his glorious victory against British Army (a battle mischievously hidden by British sources), Sikhs developed a great amount of respect and honour for Babaji. Sikh Sardars irrespective of Misal Politics respected him and He was seen as supreme Leader due to his selfless Jeevan and Sewa. In 1802, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh moved with his army to conquer Holy City of Amritsar, which was under control of Bhangi Misal. Sardars of Bhangi Misal fortified their defences, but they were weak against superior military power of Maharaja. When Babaji came to know about this, he mediated between two Misals and impressed upon Maharaja Ranjeet Singh that it would be a ‘sin’ to fire canons on Guru Nagri and it would be bigger sin for both Misals if a Sikh killed a Sikh in Holy City. At Babaji’s persuasion, Bhangi Sardars agreed to give control of Sri Amritsar to Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, who in turn gave them a big ‘Jagir’( royal property) in Multan Area and assured protection and goodwill for generations.

In 1807, Khalsa Fauj marched towards Kasoor to take control of the city from its Muslim Governor Kutub-ud-din and after a bloody battle in which Babaji led Khalsa Army from front, Governor was killed and Kasoor became part of Khalsa Raaj.

In 1814, Multan was attacked for first time and Governor of Multan accepted Khalsa Supremacy and promised to pay tax to Lahore Darbar.

In 1818, Ruler of Multan revolted against Khalsa Raaj and Maharaj Ranjeet Singh, assisted by Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji and Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa attacked Multan, to merge it in Khalsa Raaj. The Main Battle Gun, ZamZam, was stationed towards Southern wall of Multan fort to break the wall so that Khalsa Army could enter the fort and conquer the enemies. As the battle raged, one wheel of ZamZam Canon broke down and it became useless, but without ZamZam, it was virtually impossible to break the wall. Akaali Baba Phoola Singh ji exhorted his Akaali Nihang Warriors to place their shoulder in place of Gun. It was sure death, as the aftershock of fired bomb was sure to break neck and shoulder bone of anyone who placed their shoulder in place of wheel, but the fearless and brave Akali warriors chose death at call of their beloved Jathedar. One by one, Singhs jumped in front to place their shoulder, and with each shot fired, one Singh kept falling, but that didn’t stop and one by one, 23 singhs placed their shoulders under the wheel of Canon ZamZam. As the 23rd shot was fired and Singh fell, Wall of Multan fort came crashing down. Akali Nihang Warriors of Misal Shaheedan jumped in the fort and within minutes, enemies were annihilated and Khalsai Nishan Sahib raised on Multan Fort. It was exemplary bravery of Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji and his Singhs which helped conquer Multan, the second state of Khalsa Raaj.

1819- Khalsa Army moved to Kashmir and after war which continued for 3 months, in which many battles took place, Kashmir became third state of Khala Raaj. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh offered Baba Phoola Singh ji with governorship of Kashmir, which Baba ji refused and Sham Singh Attariwala was appointed first governor of Kashmir.

These were some of the glorious battles fought for creation, expansion and defence of Khalsa Raaj which will be remembered forever, especially for the bravery shown by selfless saint-soldier, Akali Baba Phoola Singh ji and His Dal.

Aarti in Sikhi

Very often, Singhs ask Daas about Aarti Maryada in Guru-Ghar, as there are certain Takhats and groups which do Aarti with lighting lamps in plates, doing Aarti like Brahmins do it in Hindu temples.

Mahapurkh Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh ji Khalsa Bhindranwale, 12th Jathedar of Damdami Taksal and renowned scholar of Gurbaani and Gurmat, who were respected by Gursikhs across Jathebandis for their Giaan, Jap-Tap and Kamaai as greatest vidwaan of 20th century have cleared concept of Aarti in ‘Gurbaani Paath Darpan’.

In chapter of Akhand Paath maryada, page 168, Santji writes.

(Do Aarti, don’t light lamps, only read Shabads of Aarti and Do Kirtan, then distribute Karah Parshad and have open Langar )

On page 135, Mahapurakhs write

(At bhog of every Paath, do Kirtan and sing Aarti (except first path of an individual’s death)
(Note- Only Sing Shabads of Aarti, don’t light lamps)

Under title of Aarti, Santji wrote complete Maryada of Aarti and in the end he writes-

(It is best to sit and sing Shabads of Aarti. Doing Aarti with lighted lamps in plates has been rejected by Satguruji.)

So going by  Gurmat and Gurbaani, it is best to sit and sing Aarti in Kirtan form without lighting lamps, as  lighting of lamps is contrary to teachings of Satguru Guru Granth Sahib ji.

(Reference Note- These pictures are from Santji's Gurbaani Paath Darpan).

Tiger of Dashmesh - 2

Baba Gurbachan Singh ji had some very unique and inspiring qualities which made him greatest General of Sikh Resistance Movement after Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa. Here I would like to share some incidents, words and actions of Babaji’s life which show his bravery, courage, determination, honesty, purity, spiritual prowess and ability to rise above worldly divisions and distractions.

Babaji and Taksal
After Operation Bluestar, some people tried to target Baba Manochahal and his intentions and alleged that He was trying to be next Mukhi of Damdami Taksal. Babaji gave out a statement to press and media which was

" I am living life of an outlaw, how can I work as Mukhi of Damdami Taksal? I joined Taksal as a vidyarthi in 1974 during Sant Kartar Singh ji’s time and after him, Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa became Jathedar. I have always been a loyal and humble vidyarthi of Taksal and will remain so forever. The Mission which Santji gave me, I will carry it forward with all the power Maharaj has given me, till my last breath. I will not run away from my responsibilities and bachans of Mahapurakh Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa. Those who are trying to create frictions between me and Baba Thakur Singh ji should stop these antics. I have always respected Babaji from the day I joined Taksal and shall continue to do it forever. The amount of Love and respect I have for Babaji, will never decrease and no one can decrease it. Yes, I will appeal to all the Singhs to remain calm and raise above all divisions and work for Charhdi kala of Panth. Only time will tell who served Taksal with all the heart and Soul."

Babaji and Movement
After Operation Bluestar, Baba Thakur Singh ji and Damdami Taksal called Sarbat Khalsa at Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib to decide future course of action. On 26th January 1986, millions of Sikhs gathered at Sri Darbar Sahib Complex and Panthic committee was formed under Babaji’s guidance. Baba Manochahal was One of Singhs of Panthic Committee. Babaji gave an emotional speech that day in front of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib wherein he outlined the future course of action, which included Sewa of Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib, Justice for victims of June and November 84 Massacres and armed struggle to attain Freedom for Sikh Panth. Babaji formed ‘Bhindranwala Tigers Force’ to fight for Freedom. When Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh ji were hanged on 6th January 1989, all the Mukhi Kharkoos gathered and did samagam for Shaheeds, where Bhai Wadhawa Singh Babbar did Kirtan and Baba Manochahal ji did ardas for Shaheeds. Baba Manochahal served as a uniting factor on many issues between Jathebandis and always stressed on unity of all the Jathebandis in One fighting force to attain freedom, an attempt which was torpedoed many a times by people like Dr.Sohan Singh and Jagjeet Singh Chohan. Babaji was part of Jatha which faced enemy bullets on 13th April 1978, and he was the Last general to fall on 28th Feb 1993, and after his Shaheedi, Movement came to a virtual standstill, which it is till today.

 Babaji’s Vision and Far-sightedness
Baba Manochahal’s younger brother, Bhai Mohinder Singh , who was also a top Kharkoo of BTFK, was shot dead by Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Sangha of same Jathebandi. Babaji was in Pakistan at that time, when he returned, his close aides reported the matter to Babaji and asked him to punish Sangha. Babaji called Sangha and asked calmly about the matter. Sangha replied to Babaji that he was ashamed and sorry for what had happened, and it was a case of wrong information, wherein he was told that Bhai Mohinder Singh had become a police agent. Babaji placed his hand on Sangha’s shoulder and said ‘’ Sangha, next time be careful about information and verify it before you shoot someone. Each and every Singh is precious in this struggle’’. Ashamed of what had happened; Bhai Sangha left Majha and started his operations in Malwa area. Singhs were surprised and amazed at restraint showed by Babaji in dealing with killer of his brother.

In 1991-92, Babaji alongwith Baba Thakur Singh ji called upon all Panthic parties and Jathebandis to fight elections as boycotting them would prove a historic blunder for Movement. But Akali factions who were sell-outs of Indian Government insisted on boycotting elections. People like Dr. Sohan Singh, Chief of Panthic committee cleverly took Babbars on his side to boycott elections and anyone who called upon Panthic parties to fight elections was labelled ‘’Government Agent’’.  Baba Thakur Singh ji asked Simranjeet Singh Maan to fight elections but he also refused. Baba Manochahal sent Bhai Manjeet Singh, son of Sant Kartar Singh and brother of Bhai Amrik Singh ji Shaheed to Panthic meeting where it was to be decided whether or not to fight elections. Bhai Manjeet Singh, who was President of AISSF that time was asked by Babaji to somehow make all Singhs understand importance of elections. But Bhai Manjeet Singh couldn’t resist the pressure of other Jathebandis and signed the declaration boycotting elections. When he returned and met Baba Manochahal, he told Babaji about his failure to stop boycott of elections. Babaji took out his Gun, placed it on Bhai Manjeet Singh’s head and said ‘’ If you were not Son of Sant Kartar Singh ji, I would have shot you by now. You don’t know what you all did today. You have signed on death warrant of thousands of Sikhs today’’.

That day Babaji said his famous bachans ‘’ Big trees will fall, river of blood of innocents will flow, people who fold hands today in front of us and ask us to visit their houses will close their doors on us, they will even refuse us water, movement will fall back by decades. Panth will understand its loss only after the loss has been made’’.

Babbars and some other Jathebandis sided with Dr.Sohan Singh that time and labelled Baba Manochahal as Congress Agent. Babaji refused to give any statement against Babbars but clearly said about Dr. Sohan Singh that ‘’ this man has talked till today, he will just talk and live on. And it’s not hard for a person like him to change his words. Those who have chosen to follow him will understand later who was right and who was wrong ‘’.

Today Babaji’s words have come true. Baba Manochahal ji sacrificed his Life for Panth, but same Dr. Sohan Singh today lives in his Bungalow in Chandigarh and attends RSS functions. Recently he gave out a statement that ‘’ I never had any relationship with Khalistan movement or Khalistanis’’.

When some Singhs praised Wassan Singh Jaffarwal in front of Baba Manochahal in 1991, Babaji smiled and said ‘’ He is not Singh, He is wassu, wassu, and with time, you will see his Truth’’. And we all saw the great surrender drama of Wassan Jaffarwal!!

Babaji and Panthic Unity
After election boycott decision and Babaji;s support for elections, some young Babbars started looking for Babaji, to shoot him. Navroop Singh was their Jathedar. After regular instigations, Singhs asked Babaji permission to teach Navroop Singh a lesson. Babaji quietly refused and politely said ‘’ If I too start acting like them, what will be the difference between me and him’’? Bhai Behla, who was right hand man of Babaji, got irritated and said ‘’ Jathedar ji, you will get killed one day and get us killed from hands of these stupid boys, without a reason. I can’t be peaceful like you’’. Babaji stood up, folded his hands and said ‘’ Singho, if you want, you can cut my head, but I will not let you fire on fellow brothers who are fighting for Panth. Yes they are on wrong path, lets do ardas to Maharaj to bless them with Bibek-Budh and understanding ‘’. After few days, Rataul encounter happened and BTFK Singhs fought for 56 hours in this encounter, killing scores of enemy forces. This sent shock waves in Kharkoos who were against Babaji. Navroop Singh confronted Sohan Singh and said ‘’ you say Manochahal is a Congress agent, if he is congress agent, how and why are his Singhs fighting for 56 hours in encounters’’?  Sohan Singh head his hung in shame and left the place. After few days, Navroop Singh went to Babaji and apologized for his stupidity.

When Jathedar Sukhdev Singh Babbar attained Shaheedi, Babaji’s sister saw Babaji crying. She said you and Sukhdev Singh had so big ideological and strategic differences between you, then why are you crying for him? Babaji said ‘’ sister, whatever our differences, still he was my brother, we were walking on same path, we had same dream, I have lost a brave brother today’’.

This was Babaji’s love and respect for fellow Singhs and Jathedars. He had the ability to rise above partisan politics and work and think for entire Panth. When whole Indian Media started a slanderous campaign against Jathedar Sukhdev Singh, to malign his image and character, it was one and only Baba Manochahal who gave out a recorded statement to defend Jathedar Sukhdev Singh, his second marriage, his lifestyle and actions. He proved it through Baani and history that Jathedar Sukhdev Singh was not wrong in having a second wife while first was alive, as he had Anand Karaj with that Bibi, Jawahar Kaur, and it was necessary for him to live in Bungalow to carry out his Kharkoo activities. It was due to Babaji’s statement that honour of Bhai Sukhdev Singh was saved , else even Singhs close to Jathedar Sukhdev Singh and various other jathedars had started pointing fingers at character of Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar.

When Singhs asked Babaji why he was defending Sukhdev Singh, who had bitter differences with him, Babaji simply said ‘’ I’m defending honour of a Shaheed who fought and died for Panth. I just can’t let his blood go waste due to all this maligning attempts’’.

Babaji and New-age thinking
Once Babaji was having Langar with some Singhs during afternoon at one of his hideouts. Some young Singhs of village were standing near Babaji. While discussing various issues, some singhs reported to Babaji about a boy and girl of village who ‘met secretly and were having a love affair’. They asked Babaji to punish them or shoot them. Babaji said ‘ Singho, if they are in love with each other, we don’t have a right to interfere, yes, if some guy abuses, molests or dishonours a Bibi, then don’t think twice before shooting him, lets not get into personal matters of people, we have a war to fight’’. Singhs became quiet after listening to Babaji. On other hand, Babaji called that boy and girl outside village Gurudwara and asked them about their relation. Shivering with fear while looking at Babaji’s face, they accepted that they loved each other. Babaji said ‘’ Ok, if you love each other, then you have to marry each other, and if any one of you backed off, I will shoot that person with my hands. Now it’s not just about love, it’s about honour of your families, our culture and religion ‘’.

This showed how much Babaji valued personal freedom, culture and traditions. Small divisive issues were unable to distract him or divert his attention. One such incident happened when Babaji was having langar at one of his shelters (called Behak in Punjabi). Babaji asked the owner of the house if he wanted anything from him. Owner said Babaji, just shoot my neighbour and I’ll be free of stress. I don’t see him face to face and I just hate him. Babaji stopped eating langar, got up and started walking. Singh ran behind Babaji and stopped him and asked reason of Babaji’s leaving. Babaji angrily said ‘Singha, if I come to you for food and shelter, don’t expect me to shoot any innocent for you. This is not what Guru Gobind Singh ji or Santji taught us. I’ll find some other place, but this is a big price to pay, killing an innocent ‘’. The Singh was ashamed of his words and apologized to Babaji.

Till today, people talk with love, passion and respect about Baba Manochahal. He was a Sant-Sipahi-Poet-Scholar.  Words fail to describe him and his personality. There are hundreds of other beautiful and inspiring incidents of Babaji’s life which are to be shared and will be shared with Sangat. Babaji was gem of Panth, a loyal soldier of Santji’s Army, a dedicated student of Damdami Taksal. In countryside of Majha, he is a legend who will live on forever. I have seen people unable to stop their tears while talking about him. His legend is Immortal, being kept alive in hearts of thousands and thousands of Sikhs, passed from generation to generation. He will be remembered forever and as the time will pass, his glory, his greatness; his light will spread through whole world, inspiring millions to walk on path of freedom and truth. Some call him Robinhood of Majha, some see in him Che Guvera,  but comparisons are not good enough for him.

He was just ‘Baba Manochahal - The Braveheart'

Tiger of Dashmesh - 1

‘He was an Angel’ ( Oh ta Farishta si),
These words describe the deep feelings of love and respect people of Punjab have for Baba Manochahal. As Buzurg Sikhs sit in groups in village centres and talk about the age gone, this one name still arouses feelings of Love and faith in hearts of many.
The policemen who saw him, who met him, who had a word with him, till today bear witness to his bravery, his simplicity and his determination to fight till end. In words of one such policeman ‘'when he was escaping after an encounter, he passed by me. He was holding his GPM in his hand and bag of ammunition was on his shoulder. Looking at him, my gun fell. If he had been any other Kharkoo, I would be dead by now, but he just looked at me, smiled and said ‘ Sikh hai,Baani padya kar, tera bhala ho jooga’ (you are a Sikh, read Baani, you will be blessed) and just vanished.

Baba Gurbachan Singh ji Manochahal joined Damdami Taksal in 1974 at age of 20 during Sant Kartar Singh ji’s time. After completing his Vidya, he started going out with Jatha on parchar missions. After Sant Kartar Singh ji, Sant Jarnail Singh ji became Jathedar of Taksal in 1977. Babaji was very close to Santji and had great respect for Santji. He was one of the few Singhs assigned by Sant Kartar Singh ji to always remain with and assist Sant Jarnail Singh ji. When Sant Jarnail Singh ji was surrounded by Punjab Police to be arrested and killed in Mumbai, Santji left secretly in a white ambassador car, while Babaji lay on Santji’s bed with a bed sheet on his face (he had height same as Santji). All the time, police and spies thought that it was Sant Jarnail Singh who was sleeping on bed, but after 8 hours Babaji removed sheet from his face, policemen were left empty handed as it was not Santji, who had gone too far to be caught by now.

He had a highly spiritual Jeevan and a long nitnem at Amritvela. Many a times, he went in Samadhi, sitting one with Akaal Purakh for days at length. This made Sant Jarnail Singh ji respect Babaji further and Santji assigned Babaji with Kar sewa of Gurudwara Bhai Dhanna Singh ji at village Naushera Pannua. Interestingly, Baba Manochahal was the one who arranged for arms and ammunitions for Babbar Khalsa Singhs (Bhai Talwinder Singh, Bhai Anokh Singh and Bhai Kulwant Singh Nagoke) and did ardas for them when they went on their first mission to punish Narkdharis.
Baba Manochahal had a very magnetic personality, a peaceful shine in his eyes and firmness on face, and at same time, he had Heart and humility of a Sant, which made him a complete Sant- Sipahi.

Santji asked Babaji on 1st June 1984 to leave Darbar Sahib Parkarma and carry on the struggle. Baba Gurbachan Singh ji formed ‘ Bhindranwala Tigers Force of Khalistan’ in 1985 to carry on mission of Santji. He was Jathedar of 5-member Panthic committee which was formed on 26th Jan 1986 to lead Khalsa Panth and carry on struggle of Khalistan. Baba Gurbachan Singh ji was respected for his vision, his farsightedness, his Panthic Piaar , his dedication and his deep faith for Mission given by Santji. He took each and every word of Santji by his heart and worked entire life to fulfill bachans of Santji.

Baba Gurbachan Singh ji had qualities which many other leaders of Sikh Resistance Movement lacked. He was not only a soldier, but also a scholar, a poet, a visionary, a statesman, an ideologue of Movement. He had all the qualities which were needed in an able General, and He WAS the one. This was the reason that all Government Agencies, Traitors, agents and touts worked with all their might to bring him down someway.
There was Four million Rupee reward on his head, raids were carried out at 40-60 places at same time, with more than 60,000 Government troops involved, but the Great Warrior, Baba Manochahal always escaped the net and cordon of Military forces.
He was labeled ‘Agent of Congress’ by some so-called Panthic Leaders of those times, like Dr. Sohan Singh, who with help of government agencies had established themselves as leaders and ideologues of Kharkoo Jathebandis. But that didn’t stop Babaji from his mission. He didn’t care what people talked about him, who stood with him or against him, what danger he had to face due to his actions. He was a Sant, someone who had gone beyond filth, impurity and corruption of world and its distractions. He was working as a soldier of Dasmesh Pita, with his inner self imbued in Naam and Baani. He walked as a companion of 18th century Sikhs, without caring for the thorns cutting his feet and body. Burning heat of Punjab’s summers or chilling cold of winters, which he spent in fields of Punjab didn’t break his confidence. One by one, all his companions, all loyal soldiers fell in battlefield. His father, mother, brothers, nephews sacrificed their lives at altar of truth. Left alone in battlefield, he was asked by well-wishers to leave the battlefield and enemies called upon him to surrender, but this brave heart son of Guru Gobind Singh ji, soldier of Khalsa Panth, the true ‘Taksali Nihang’, the care-less Sant-Sipahi roamed in streets of villages singing ‘Sir dittea baajh nahi rehna Dharam Sir ditteaa baajh nahi rehna’ ( Dharam will not survive without sacrificing our heads).

And the day came, when he quietly drank the poison given by friends,to whom he had gone for food and shelter. As he understood what had happened, he quietly left the place where he drank the poison and started walking to an unknown destination, knowing very well that journey would end very soon and he will be in his Father's feet. The enemies were following him, quietly watching his steps, waiting for him to fall. They didn’t carry enough courage to challenge poisoned Son of Guru Gobind Singh ji, whose name itself used to send shivers down their spine. As the ‘albela’ Baba kept walking, poison showed its effects and this ‘Tiger of Bhindranwala’ fell in a field outside the village of Rataul. As he fell and his Holy Soul flew away to Immortal Palace of Guru Gobind Singh ji, cowards of Punjab police appeared and pumped numerous bullets in his life-less body.

Baba Manochahal kept his promise, which he had made to Sant Kartar Singh ji and Sant Jarnail Singh ji Khalsa, to always remain a loyal and humble soldier of Khalsa Panth, to fight for Panth and Dharam till last breath and sacrifice his life for Charhdi Kala of Khalsa Panth.

Baba Manochahal ji used to say ‘’ When a Shaheed sacrifices his life, don’t pray for his soul to ‘rest in peace’, instead pray to Maharaj and Shaheed Singhs to send that holy soul again to serve the Panth as Panth needs brave and pure Souls. Only those blessed souls can take Panth to Charhdi kala’’.

Following Babaji’s bachans, I ask him and other brave Shaheeds not to Rest in Peace ( R.I.P.) but ‘’ Rise Again’’ (R.A.)

Baba Gurbachan Singh ji Manochahal – R.A.
